On Thursday 21st January, the Varsity Darts team returned home in triumph with the Brussels Cup. In total, 36 legs of darts were played – after 35 legs St John’s led by 2 points – everything rested on the last of the 36 legs.
St John’s were taken aback at the beginning of the tourament by the clinical finishing of the Laeken team, which by the mid-point had put Laeken in a commanding position, they led by 14 points.
It was time to introduce our secret weapon – the coffee machine. From then on, St John’s staged a magnificent comeback.
Sterling performances from Aris and Cal who started seeing and hitting their doubles. Brad received a set of darts for scoring the highest score of the competition – 160!!!!!
Ignace, and Franco kept the points coming in but the steely nerve of the day belongs to Pierre Louis. Coming on for the final leg, knowing that if he lost it would spell a certain
victory for Laeken. P-L nailed the Brussels cup with a double three.
The match was a great deal of fun and played in a true spirit of sportspersonship. We look forward to inviting Laeken to play at St John’s in May.
The Brussels Cup will be presented to Mr Lowney at the next High School assembly by the team.
